Stephen C. James, CPA

Founder & Trustee
Administration from the University of Louisville in 1986. From 1986-1992, he practiced as a CPA with several local firms, including Ernst & Young. Steve went on to serve as controller, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) for several companies, including, Dant Clayton Corporation, Analytical Services Laboratory, Benefit Services Group, LTD, and ADENTA, Dental Plans. In 2003, Steve joined Mortenson Family Dental (now Mortenson Dental Partners), originally serving in the capacity of COO, then went on to serve as Mortenson’s CFO and Company Treasurer in 2008. In his tenure with Mortenson, Steve has developed an extensive knowledge of Group Dental Practices which has enabled Mortenson to become one of the largest and the fastest growing dental groups in America; he, additionally introduced an Employee Stock Ownership Program (ESOP) to Mortenson (one of the first Dental Practice ESOPs in America).

Heather L. Driscoll

 Director of Trustee Services
Heather Driscoll has spent the past 6 years serving the ESOP community in a variety of roles. In 2017, she joined SCJ Consulting as the Director of Trustee Services. She brings great expertise in the areas of organizational leadership, compliance, and process documentation, as well as a focus on employee education and communication. Throughout her career, she has had the opportunity to work intimately with several ESOP organizations, both in and out of the healthcare field. In addition to her role with SCJ, Heather is the co-founder of Smart Choice Dentistry; a Dental Service Organization. Previously, she served as the Vice President of Operations for Mortenson Dental Partners, an ESOP Company from 2011-2017. She was responsible for the daily operations and leadership development in 120+ practices throughout the United States, and was responsible for over $175 M, in annual patient care revenue. Heather is a graduate of Western Iowa Technical Community College, Sioux City, IA. Her personal executive development has been through the Darden School of Business and Kellogg School of Management, along with ongoing leadership development through Whitehall Management and Mary O’Neill, Inc. Heather is committed to life-long learning and recently became certified with The Leadership Circle–a leadership and business effectiveness training program. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her husband Eric, and their 2 children.

Drew Schaefer

Director of Finance/Compliance
Drew Schaefer joined SCJ Consulting full time in 2018, but has been affiliated with SCJ since 2015, engaging as needed for his financial expertise. Drew graduated from the University of Dayton in 2005, with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Master of Business Administration. Drew began his career with Ernst & Young (2005-2008) and became a CPA in 2007. He has also worked in a financial reporting capacity with ResCare, Inc (2008-2010). Drew joined Mortenson Dental Partners (an ESOP company) in 2010, and was appointed Controller in 2012–a position he held through 2016. It was through this experience that he first came to appreciate the benefits of working for an ESOP company and was deeply involved in ESOP administration and strategies. He then joined a group of Ameriprise franchise advisers in a lead accounting and finance capacity through 2018. Drew is the Director of Finance and Compliance for SCJ Consulting Services, LLC. In his free time, Drew enjoys spending time with his wife, Kristin, and their three children. When he’s not crunching numbers, Drew can be found playing outside with his children, restoring or re-purposing anything old, or building something his wife found on Pinterest.

Shamere Grant
Corporate Development

Shamere Grant joined SCJ in 2018, bringing a wealth of knowledge to SCJ from the Banking Industry. Shamere is a proud graduate of Campbellsville University, where he earned his Undergraduate Degree in Economics, as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Shamere has a deep understanding of Business Operations as he has ran a successful construction company. He has previously worked in an ESOP company, and has seen first-hand how ESOP’s increase employee productivity and loyalty.Having lots of familiarity in the the Construction, Technology and Dental space Shamere would love to speak to you about your business.  In his free time, Shamere enjoys spending time with his Wife and son. Shamere’s passion is educating himself about companies in all verticals, as well as understanding how the end consumer makes a decision to spend money.
